About the Institution

Shafiq Memorial Senior secondary school is a government aided school which was established in the year 1948 under the aegis of Delhi Education Society. It is situated at Bara Hindu Rao Delhi 110006. The school is recognised by directorate of education NCT of Delhi and affiliated to CBSE up to class 12th with all three streams that is Arts, commerce and science. It is a largely an Urdu medium school, with sections in both English and Hindi medium.

MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

A wing of Jamia Millia Islamia called Talimi Markaz was working closely with community children at Karol Bagh before Independence with Mr.Shafiqur Rahman Kidwai as it’s in charge. This centre was closed down in 1947 due to communal riots. At Bara Hindu Rao, Where the school exists today, Madarsa Rehmania was running since 1913 financed by Mr.Ataur Rehman, a visionary businessman. He left for Pakistan after partition and entrusted Dr. Zakir Hussain then Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia to take care of this educational institute. Those associated with Talimi Markaz at Karol Bagh started living in the vacant rooms of this institute and worked closely with the community, and in establishing peace and communal harmony. In July 1948, Mr.Shafiqur Rahman Kidwai after consultations with Dr. Zakir Hussain and others, decided to re-establish that Talimi Markaz in the abandoned Madrasa premises at Bara Hindu Rao. The school was started as an experimental school from class 1 to 5, which later was upgraded to include classes six to eight and was called Delhi Middle School. Later, Delhi Education Society was formed which took over the management of the school and had thinkers like Zakir Hussain, M. Mujeeb and Mirza Mehmood Beg as its members. The school got recognized by Department of Education Delhi. In 1953 when Mr.Shafiqur Rahman Kidwai, who was the then education minister of Delhi left for his heavenly abode Delhi education Society changed the name of Delhi Middle School to Shafiq Memorial school to honour the grant philanthropist. The school was upgraded to higher secondary level in 1962 and later to the senior secondary level in 1979. It is a government aided school which receives 95% grant towards teachers’ salaries from the government of Delhi. The vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia who is the President of Delhi education Society is also the chairman of the school’s managing committee in his/ her ex-officio capacity.
